If you have been told you have a damaged underground drain pipe in Sydney, the traditional solution — dig it up and replace it — can feel daunting. The excavation, the disruption to your garden or driveway, the cost and the mess. Trenchless drain pipe repair, also known as pipe relining, offers an alternative that fixes the pipe from the inside without the need for major digging. But is it always the right choice? As a leading plumber in Sydney, Hero Plumbing uses both methods and this guide will help you understand the difference so you can make an informed decision.

What Is Trenchless Drain Pipe Repair?

Trenchless drain repair is an umbrella term for techniques that repair or replace underground pipes without excavating a trench along the full length of the pipe. The two most common methods used in Sydney residential properties are pipe relining (cured-in-place pipe lining) and pipe bursting.

Pipe Relining (Cured-In-Place Pipe)

A felt liner saturated with epoxy resin is inserted into the damaged pipe — either pulled through with a cable or inverted using water or air pressure. Once in position, an inflatable bladder pushes the liner firmly against the inside wall of the existing pipe. The resin is then cured using UV light, hot water, or ambient temperature depending on the product used. Once cured, the liner forms a hard, smooth new pipe inside the old one. The result is a jointless, root-resistant, watertight pipe with a design life of 50 years or more.

Pipe Bursting

A bursting head is pulled through the existing pipe, fracturing it outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling a new pipe into place behind it. This method is used when the existing pipe needs to be fully replaced rather than relined — for example when the pipe has collapsed entirely and relining is not possible. It still requires access pits at each end but avoids trenching along the full pipe run.

How Does the Process Work?

Regardless of which trenchless method is used, the process always starts the same way:

  • CCTV drain camera inspection: A camera is fed through the pipe to identify the exact location and extent of the damage, confirm the pipe retains enough of its shape for relining, and assess whether there are root intrusions or joint separations that need addressing first.
  • High-pressure water jetting: The pipe is thoroughly cleaned using a high-pressure water jet to remove root matter, scale, and debris. Relining over a dirty pipe will not bond properly.
  • Liner installation: The resin-saturated liner is inserted and cured as described above. The time from insertion to cure varies from 30 minutes to a few hours depending on the curing method and pipe diameter.
  • Post-installation CCTV: A second camera run confirms the liner has bonded evenly, there are no voids or bubbles, and the pipe is fully watertight.

What Types of Damage Can Be Relined?

Pipe relining is suitable for a wide range of damage types:

  • Cracked or fractured pipes (including root intrusion cracks)
  • Corroded cast iron or clay pipes
  • Joint separations and minor misalignments
  • Pinholes and localised leaks
  • Partial collapses where the pipe retains enough shape for a liner to be inserted

It is not suitable for fully collapsed pipes, pipes that have deformed to the point a liner cannot pass through, or pipes with severe root intrusion that cannot be cleared first. A blocked drain in Sydney caused by a fully collapsed pipe will require excavation and replacement regardless of the relining option.

How Much Does Trenchless Drain Repair Cost in Sydney?

Pipe relining is priced per metre of pipe relined, plus the cost of the initial CCTV inspection and jetting. As a general guide for Sydney:

  • CCTV drain inspection: $250 to $450
  • High-pressure water jetting: $300 to $600 depending on pipe length and blockage severity
  • Pipe relining (per metre): $400 to $800 per metre, with most residential jobs covering 3 to 6 metres of pipe
  • Total for a typical residential relining job: $2,500 to $6,000+

These are indicative ranges. The actual cost depends on pipe diameter, depth, access, and how much pipe needs to be relined. Always get a written quote after CCTV inspection — any reputable plumber should not be able to give you a firm price before seeing the camera footage.

Is Trenchless Drain Repair Worth It?

The honest answer is: it depends. Here is how to think about it:

Trenchless is usually better when:

  • The damaged pipe runs under a driveway, paved area, or established garden where excavation would be costly or destructive
  • The pipe runs under a structure (slab, deck, extension) making excavation impractical
  • The damage is cracking, root intrusion, or joint separation across a length of pipe rather than one localised break
  • You want a long-term solution with a 50-year design life and no future root issues

Excavation may be better when:

  • The pipe has fully collapsed and a liner cannot be inserted
  • The damage is a single short section in an accessible, open area where excavation is straightforward
  • The pipe has badly misaligned joints or significant sag (belly) that relining cannot correct
  • The pipe diameter is very small or very large, outside the range of available liner sizes

Can You Do Trenchless Drain Repair Yourself?

No. Pipe relining requires specialised equipment, epoxy resin materials, curing rigs, and CCTV camera systems. It is not a DIY option and in NSW any work on sewer lines must be carried out by a licensed plumber. Attempting to patch a sewer pipe without a licence carries significant fines and personal liability for any resulting damage.
